The time of year when “fynbos” gardens come to life. So what is a fynbos garden. Well sadly all too offer people want a small piece of the mountain in their garden with little idea on how to care for it. With over 6000 species in 9 zones what do you select.....as no gardens can match the true condition fynbos thrives in. The traditional European form of gardening so many have grown to understand as the norm will kill fynbos. People ask why their ericas, proteas, felicias gnidias don’t last and die over time. Well many answers can be found in inappropriate soil, chemical fertilizers, excessive weeding, over watering, drainage and yes.... the gardener. Fynbos slash indigenous gardening if done correctly is incredibly rewarding however requires a change in traditional gardening regimes. A few pics in a corner of my test garden with clay soil and a high salt borehole water. It can work, just needs breaking from the norm.
